Sealants

Shielding Your Teeth from Decay

Sealants are an excellent preventive measure against tooth decay and cavities, particularly on molars and premolars, which are prone to decay due to their grooves. Applied primarily to children’s permanent molars and premolars when they first emerge, typically between the ages of 6 and 14, sealants offer crucial protection during these cavity-prone years. However, adults without decay or fillings in their molars can also benefit from sealants. The application process is swift, involving thorough cleaning and drying of the teeth, followed by applying a liquid solution to the chewing surfaces and curing it with a special light to harden and bond the sealant. Acting as a barrier, sealants shield the enamel from plaque and acids and can last for several years before needing reapplication. Despite their effectiveness, sealants are not a replacement for regular brushing and flossing. Maintaining proper oral hygiene and undergoing professional dental cleanings remain essential, as sealants do not protect the spaces between teeth.
